ConnectiClad Multi-Layer Clad Metal for Battery Interconnect Systems

Engineered five-layer clad metal combining electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance for reliable lithium-ion battery interconnect systems.

As lithium-ion battery systems continue to increase in power density and complexity, battery interconnect materials must balance electrical performance, mechanical integrity, corrosion resistance, and manufacturability. Traditional single-alloy materials often require tradeoffs between these competing requirements.

ConnectiClad™ metal is Materion's engineered five-layer clad metal developed specifically for battery interconnect systems. Its unique construction combines multiple metals into a single material, helping designers achieve efficient current transfer, structural support and long-term durability in a weldable, compact, low-profile solution.

FIVE LAYERS WORKING TOGETHER

Rather than relying on one material to provide every performance characteristic, ConnectiClad material uses an engineered five-layer architecture in which each layer contributes a specific function.

The copper core provides excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, stainless steel layers add mechanical strength, rigidity, and resistance weldability, and copper-nickel outer layers improve corrosion resistance, durability and joining performance.

The result is a material that combines the advantages of multiple metals into a single engineered solution for demanding battery applications.

ENGINEERED FOR RELIABLE MANUFACTURING

Battery manufacturers require materials that integrate efficiently into existing production processes while maintaining consistent performance throughout the life of the battery.

ConnectiClad metal supports common manufacturing methods including laser welding, resistance welding, soldering, stamping, and forming. Standard configurations are available with either 60% or 80% copper cores, allowing designers to balance conductivity and mechanical performance based on application requirements. Additional clad constructions are available for specialized designs.

PERFORMANCE DESIGNED FOR DEMANDING BATTERY ENVIRONMENTS

Battery interconnect materials must withstand moisture, humidity, and repeated operating cycles while maintaining electrical performance.

ConnectiClad material combines corrosion-resistant copper-nickel outer layers with a highly conductive copper core to help deliver long-term reliability. Internal testing has demonstrated strong weld performance together with corrosion and electrolytic corrosion resistance, supporting dependable battery module performance over time. Complete performance data and testing results are available in the Product Brief.

Whether you're developing electric vehicles, power tools, industrial equipment or other battery-powered systems, Materion engineers can help identify the right ConnectiClad configuration for your application.
